PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Improved recognition for private practitioners’ Legal Aid work

Last week I was pleased to receive a letter from Legal Aid NSW advising that fees paid to private lawyers doing legal aid work for all State matters have increased, effective 1 July. You may recall in November 2019, following strong advocacy from Legal Aid NSW and The Law Society of NSW, the NSW Government committed to providing an additional $88 million to Legal Aid NSW over four years. The fourth increase in the fee rate paid to private lawyers in State matters will put the hourly rate at $195. Continue reading >

Uncontested probate applications – extension of time to file paper-based applications
On 1 August 2023 Amendment No 434 to the Supreme Court Rules 1970 comes into effect. The amendment requires that, with limited exceptions, non-contentious applications for a grant of probate or administration or for the resealing of a foreign grant are made and filed in the Supreme Court electronically. To assist with the transition to electronic filing, the Supreme Court will continue to accept paper-based applications up to and including 1 September 2023. See the announcement here.
