Submission of the Week: NSW Sentencing Council’s review of serious road crime offences
Increasing maximum penalties for serious road crime offences could have unintended consequences for disadvantaged groups. Earlier this year, we made a submission to the NSW Sentencing Council’s review of serious road crime offences, in which we supported the investigation of potential measures to improve the criminal justice response to serious road crime. We highlighted our concerns that the unintended consequences of increasing maximum penalties include affecting progress towards Closing the Gap. We noted any law reform should be accompanied by increased resourcing of justice agencies to ensure that victims and their families have access to effective, trauma-informed support services as needed. We look forward to further engaging with the Sentencing Council as the review progresses. For all of our submissions, please visit the Policy Submissions 2024 page.
