Lift remediation and upgrade in the Law Courts Building
The Law Courts Building at Queens Square is undertaking a significant lift remediation and upgrade project starting today. Stage one of the project will involve the shutdown of three out of six low-rise lifts. This phase is expected to last until at least May 2025. During this period, the profession should plan accordingly and allow extra time for attendances, especially before the Supreme Court, due to reduced lift availability. The Supreme Court apologises for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation as the Law Courts Building infrastructure is maintained.

Specialist Accreditation | Change to the Specialist Accreditation year in 2025
The Council of the Law Society of NSW and the Specialist Accreditation Board have resolved that the Law Society align the Specialist Accreditation year with the Practising Certificate/Solicitor Membership year, and that the Law Society align the Specialist Accreditation CPD year with the Uniform Law CPD year. The Specialist Accreditation year will now run from 1 July to 30 June each year, instead of 1 May to 30 April. To facilitate the first year of the transition, your current accreditation will automatically be validated until 30 June 2025 at no additional cost. Thereafter renewals will occur on 1 July each year, with applications for renewal due by 30 June each year. Specialists will be able to complete their Specialist Accreditation renewal at the same time as their PC/SM renewal. The Specialist CPD year will end on 31 March each year. This means you need to have completed your Specialist Accreditation CPD by this date. We will offer all specialists a grace period in 2025 given the change, so you will have until 30 April 2025 to complete this. If you have any questions, please contact our team at specialists@lawsociety.com.au or 9926 0305. Further information will be available closer to the 2025 renewal period.

Submission of the Week: NSW Law Reform Commission’s review of serious racial and religious vilification
Earlier this year, we made a submission to the NSW Law Reform Commission’s review of serious racial and religious vilification, to assist in developing informed and effective law reform that promotes community cohesion and inclusion. We put forward a number of views, including that it is important for section 93Z of the Crimes Act 1900 to be assessed within the broader framework of criminal and civil provisions, that are designed to address vilification in NSW. We note ongoing controversy regarding this issue and look to the Law Reform Commission’s considered view on how to ensure our legal frameworks effectively address vilification. For all of our submissions, please visit the Policy Submissions 2024 page.
