Advice for court users following Friday's outage
Courts and Tribunals were impacted by the global IT issue on Friday afternoon. Staff from the Department of Communities and Justice have been working across the weekend to ensure courts and tribunals will be operational today, as per the court lists issued on Friday. Some issues may arise in the morning, and throughout the day, and we ask the profession and all court users to remain patient and courteous and follow the instructions of court staff.

Public Consultation for the Proposed Law Society of New South Wales Professional Standards Scheme beginning 22 November 2024
The Law Society of New South Wales has prepared a professional standards scheme under the Professional Standards Act 1994 (NSW). Each state and territory has professional standards legislation to:
- protect consumers of professional services and other occupational services;
- improve occupational standards;
- allow scheme participants to limit their civil liability.

Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration Conference: A National Justice Forum on Sexual Assault
The AIJA, with sponsorship from the Commonwealth government, is holding a national justice forum on sexual assault at the Banco Court, Sydney on 2-4 August 2024. The opening address will be delivered by The Hon Virginia Bell AC. Further details on the conference may be found here. On Saturday night, 3 August, the conference dinner will be held at the Sheraton Grand Hotel and Suzie Miller, Australian international playwright, screenwriter, and novelist will be the guest speaker. Justice Yehia will explore some of the leading reforms and initiatives that have made NSW an enduring beacon of stability and how the state can continue to be a model of the administration of criminal justice, diversionary pathways, and improving the lives of its citizens.

Federal Court Registry: request regarding urgent emails
When practitioners are emailing the Court’s Registry about matters which are listed before Judges and Registrars within the next 48 hours, could they please include as the subject line of the email:
Urgent – Next Court Date (eg: Listing 17 July 2024) – Matter number – Matter Name
This request is made so that any documents (including submissions) can be processed urgently and provided to the relevant Judge or Registrar in advance of the court listing.

The seventh edition of the Sentencing of Federal Offenders in Australia - A Guide for Practitioners.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (Cth) (CDPP) has recently published this comprehensive sentencing Guide, which reflects the law as at 14 June 2024. The guide has been updated by Des Lane of the Victorian Bar, with valuable assistance from Grace Devereaux of the Queensland Bar and prosecutors from the CDPP.
