Supreme Court Bicentennial Concert
Ludwig van Beethoven’s The Consecration of the House (Die Weihe des Hauses) opened the program at Vienna’s Theater am Kärntnertor on 7 May 1824. Just 10 days later, the Supreme Court of NSW was officially proclaimed in Sydney. The overture was also performed at the first sitting of the Reichstag after the horrors of WWII and in the first concert of the Boston Symphony Orchestra after Covid. It is a powerful work that looks forward as well as back. The Supreme Court Bicentennial Concert will be held on Friday, 1 November 2024 at 7.00pm in the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The concert programme, curated by the conductor of the Sydney Lawyers Orchestra, Thomas Jones, interprets the 200-year history of the Court through the works of composers such as George Palmer, Frederick Septimus Kelly and Henry Tate. They will be joined by guest soprano Ellen McNeil and the NSW Bar Choir. Tickets available here.

Submission of the Week: Comprehensive review of the Land Acquisition (Just Terms Compensation) Act 1991
Earlier this year, we made a submission to the government where we suggested the review would benefit from further targeted engagement, specifically with business groups and former landowners to ensure a diversity of stakeholder views and relevant expertise in this area are captured. We are awaiting review recommendations. For all of our submissions, please visit the Policy Submissions 2024 page.
