Reminder: CPD year concludes on 31 March 2025
There are a few weeks remaining of the current CPD year, concluding on 31 March 2025. It is a statutory condition of a practising certificate to comply with CPD and you will be asked to declare your CPD compliance as part of your practising certificate renewal. If you are eligible to apply for an exemption from your CPD requirements for the current CPD year (ending 31 March 2025), you can do so by completing our online form. Appointment of Magistrate & Deputy State Coroner Elizabeth Ryan & Magistrate Imad Abdul-Karim as Judges of the District Court of NSW
Magistrate and Deputy State Coroner Elizabeth Ryan and Magistrate Imad Abdul-Karim have been appointed as Judges of the District Court of NSW. A formal ceremony to honour this occasion will be held in the John Maddison Tower on Level 21 at 9:00am on Monday 17 March 2025. An invitation is extended to be present and to attend morning tea following the ceremony in the function room of the District Court on Level 21. Willoughby City Library is hosting talks on retirement villages during National Law Week (May 16-22, 2025) in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. District Court Criminal Practice Note 26, ‘Walama List Sentencing Procedure’, commenced at the Sydney District Court on 3 March 2025. The Practice Note applies to matters committed for sentence or where a plea of guilty was entered upon arraignment after 1 December 2021.

Jury Amendment Act 2024 No 24
The Jury Amendment Act 2024 commences today, 10 March 2025, with the exception of section 53D. The Act will make several amendments to the Jury Act 1977 to improve the efficiency of jury empanelment, provide enhanced support for jurors to perform their role, and reduce the expenditure of resources on trials that are ultimately aborted or result in hung juries, where possible.
