As 2024 draws to a close, the end of the CPD year is not that much further off. As usual, our dedicated CPD team has curated a program of learning designed not only to meet solicitors’ mandatory requirements, but also to engage practitioners’ curiosity. You will have recently received an email announcing the launch of our 2025 CPD program, with courses of one to eleven units available from 30 January – 31 March. They include two one-day intensive courses on Property Law, and on Elder Law, Wills and Probate; a course on drafting wills over two half-days; the Law Society’s respected 10-unit Practice Management Course; and a two-day course on Conveyancing Fundamentals for Solicitors. Special Sitting Arrangements During the Local Court Fixed Vacation Period 2024-2025
Normal rostered sittings of the Local Court, Children’s Court and Coronial Jurisdiction will be suspended on and from Monday 23 December 2024 and will recommence on Monday 6 January 2025. Friday 20 December 2024 will be a statewide Chambers Day. Special sitting arrangements will apply throughout this period. Full details of the special arrangements are available here.

Federal Circuit and Family Law Court of Australia Webex Expanded Pilot
As of Monday 11 November 2024, the New South Wales (NSW) registries (including Albury and Lismore) and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) will join an expanded Webex pilot. This follows a successful initial pilot with judges and registrars conducted nationally earlier this year. Law Reform Update: Amendments to the Uniform Civil Procedure Rules
On 1 October 2024, the Uniform Rules Committee approved Amendment No 103 to the Uniform Civil Procedure Rules and updated forms 25, 26A, and 27A. Amendment No 103 modifies Rule 33.1 (Definitions) and Rule 33.6 (Compliance with subpoena) to regulate the use of electronic and digital payment systems for tendering conduct money and ensuring subpoena compliance. This includes providing examples of items equivalent to a sum of money as defined in Rule 33.1 and adding mechanisms in Rule 33.6 for offering electronic payment of conduct money and for making orders if conduct money is not paid before an addressee gives evidence. The Amendment took effect on 4 October 2024. Additionally, forms 25, 26A, and 27A were updated to reflect the amendments to the Rules. Appointment of Australia’s first Anti-Slavery Commissioner
On 11 November 2024 the Attorney-General announced the appointment of Mr Chris Evans as the inaugural Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner for a five year term commencing on 2 December 2024. Mr Evans has held the roles of Strategic Engagement Lead and Chief Executive Officer of the Global Freedom Network, Walk Free, leading the organisation’s national and international engagement with faith leaders, governments, business and civil society to strengthen legislative and policy responses to modern slavery.

Federal Court of Australia Corporations List
On 24 October 2022, the Court notified practitioners of the allocation and listing procedures for corporations matters (see Schedule 1 to the Commercial and Corporations Practice Note (C&C-1)). The weekly Corporations List in the South Australian registry has ceased to operate. Please refer to this Notice to the Profession regarding matters filed in the NSW, Victorian, Queensland and West Australian registries.
