Specialist Accreditation: expressions of interest for Board and Advisory Committee placements
The Specialist Accreditation Program is calling for expressions of interest from practitioners interested in obtaining a place on the Specialist Accreditation Board for 2025, or the 2026 Advisory Committees (2025 Advisory Committee for Family Law). Board placements are applicable from early 2025, and Advisory Committee placements are applicable from July 2025 within the areas of Children’s Law, Dispute Resolution, Employment & Industrial Law, Family Law, Immigration Law, Personal Injury, Planning & Environment Law and Elder Law. Commencement Services for 2025 Law Term: Red Mass, Sydney
The Mass, which begins at 9:00 am on Monday, 3 February at St Mary’s Cathedral, College Street, Sydney, will be officiated by Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP and Fr Peter Joseph, spiritual director of the STM Society. Judges and counsel may robe in the Crypt beneath the Cathedral from 8:30 am. The legal profession is invited to join us for Morning Tea in Cathedral House following the Red Mass.

The Law Council of Australia’s Federal Dispute Resolution Section invites you to attend the third annual Commonwealth Law Conference. Review of Connect Global Drug Rehab Facility ordered following allegations
The Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) has requested that practitioners involved in bail proceedings be made aware of the review by DCJ of the use of the Connect Global drug rehabilitation facility. Attorney General Michael Daley ordered the review "as a matter of urgency" following a number of allegations about the standard of care and supervision at Connect Global. DCJ Secretary Michael Tidball has said the issue raises serious concerns.

There will be 11 new Magistrates sworn in on 28, 29, 30 and 31 January, and 3 and 4 February at 9:00am in courtroom 5.2 of the Downing Centre Local Court. There will be a Full Bench ceremony to mark their swearing-in as a Magistrate of the Local Court of NSW.

A ceremonial sitting of a Full Court of the Federal Court of Australia will be held in Sydney on Friday 21 February 2025 to welcome the Honourable Justice James Stellios as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia. The ceremonial sitting will be held at 9:15am in Court 1, Level 21, Federal Court of Australia, Law Courts Building, Queens Square, Sydney, with morning tea served afterwards. Members of the profession are asked to reply to Ms Dimitra Argyros by email (preferred) to dimitra.argyros@fedcourt.gov.au or 02 8099 8432 by 7 February 2025. Seating will be arranged in Court 1 or another Court for viewing via video link.

Reminder: important changes to the Foreign Resident Capital Gains Withholding (FRCGW) regime
Relevant provisions of the Treasury Laws Amendment (2024 Tax and Other Measures No 1) Act 2024 commenced on 1 January 2025 and amended the FRCGW regime by removing the $750,000 threshold and increasing the withholding rate from 12.5 per cent to 15 per cent. The amendments apply to contracts made on or after 1 January 2025. Information about the changes is available here, and the ATO has also updated its general guidance here.
