District Court Annual Conference: 2025 arrangements
The following state-wide arrangements will be in place for the District Court Annual Conference next year:
- The Annual Conference will be held for one day on Friday 31 October 2025. This is because the working week following Easter Monday is only for 3 days, with the ANZAC Day public holiday occurring on the Friday of that week.
- There will be no trials listed in the 3 day week commencing 22 April 2025, unless trials spill over into that week, but that should be sought to be avoided. Instead, short matters will be listed for that week.

Message from the Chief Justice regarding available hearing dates in the Common Law Division
Due to a number of recent settlements, hearing dates have become available in the period August to December 2024. Cases being managed in the Professional Negligence and Long Matters Lists may be allocated dates in that period. Further, practitioners who either have a case in those Lists that has already been allocated a hearing date in 2025 but wish to have the matter heard in 2024 or have cases that would be suitable for a 2024 hearing date, should contact the chambers of Justice Cavanagh at chambers.cavanaghJ@courts.nsw.gov.au to arrange to have the matter listed for directions and the allocation of a hearing date in 2024.

New data accuracy requirements for trade or transfer of Murray-Darling Basin water rights
From 1 July 2024 the Water Amendment (Restoring Our Rivers) Act 2023 (Cth) establishes new obligations when providing tradeable water rights information to water market authorities. Civil penalties will now apply for not providing all the information required on a trade form, for providing false or misleading information in a trade form, and for not keeping records. Annual federal courts and tribunals fee increases from 1 July 2024
The fees payable in the federal courts and tribunals will increase from 1 July 2024 to reflect changes to the consumer price index over the past financial year. This is an automatic increase provided for by the relevant fees regulations. Read the full notice here.

IP Australia’s TM Checker
IP Australia has announced its TM Checker tool is out of pilot phase. TM Checker allows users to: check if a trade mark is available for registration, assess the distinctiveness of a potential trade mark, estimate the cost and time required for a trade mark application, and apply to register a trade mark.

Commonwealth Procurement Rules 1 July 2024
The Commonwealth Procurement Rules (CPRs) have been updated to take effect on 1 July 2024. The CPRs set out the rules that Commonwealth officials must follow when performing duties related to procurement. The CPRs are amended as required to give effect to government policy or improve their clarity. A table of changes is available here.

Tax Agent Services Amendment (Updating Fees) Regulations 2024
The Regulations amend the registration application fees for tax agents and BAS agents that will apply under a new one-year registration period. The new fee amounts will take effect from 1 July 2024. See the Explanatory Statement here.

The NSW Court Service Centre temporarily closed
The NSW Court Service Centre will be closed from 3pm on Friday 28 June 2024 to undertake system maintenance and mandatory training. Normal operations will resume from 8:30am on Monday 1 July 2024.

Judge Michael Allen named new Chief Magistrate of NSW Local Court
On 19 June 2024, the Attorney General announced Judge Michael Allen as the next Chief Magistrate of the Local Court of NSW. Judge Allen is currently the resident list judge in Penrith and was a Local Court magistrate for almost a decade before taking up the role of Deputy Chief Magistrate in 2018. He will be sworn in on 8 July 2024.

Belinda Rigg SC appointed to NSW Supreme Court
On 19 June 2024, the Attorney General announced the appointment of Belinda Rigg SC as a judge of the Supreme Court of NSW. Ms Rigg was appointed Senior Counsel in 2014 and for the past five years has been the NSW Senior Public Defender. Belinda Rigg SC will be sworn in on 24 July 2024.

- Surcharge purchaser duty will increase from eight per cent to nine per cent for surcharge duty transactions that occur on or after 1 January 2025.
- Surcharge land tax will increase from four per cent to five per cent for all residential land owned by a foreign person at midnight on 31 December in any year, commencing with 2024.
- The land tax threshold will remain at $1,075,000 for the 2025 and subsequent land tax years. Read more.
