Meeting the AML/CTF challenge

This week, we expect the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs to finalise its report on its Inquiry into the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism (AML/CTF) Bill. In that report, we’ll learn whether the Standing Committee was persuaded by the strong evidence from both the Law Society of NSW and the Law Council of Australia, including the in-person appearance at the Inquiry of the LCA’s President-elect and Chair of its AML/CTF Working Group, Juliana Warner, with LCA colleagues. Special Sitting Arrangements During the Local Court Fixed Vacation Period 2024-2025
Normal rostered sittings of the Local Court, Children’s Court and Coronial Jurisdiction will be suspended on and from Monday 23 December 2024 and will recommence on Monday 6 January 2025. Friday 20 December 2024 will be a statewide Chambers Day. Special sitting arrangements will apply throughout this period. Full details of the special arrangements are available here.

Industrial Relations Commission of NSW - New Usual Directions
The Industrial Relations Commission of NSW Rule Committee has reviewed the Commission’s Usual Directions pursuant to s 185A(1) of the Industrial Relations Act 1996. To ensure the efficient running of matters and to retain hearing dates, parties will note the new in-person compliance hearings before the Registrar. The updated Usual Directions, re-issued on 1 November 2024, are available on the Commission’s website.

Submission of the Week: Review of Out-of-Home Care cost and pricing (Review)
Earlier this year, we made a submission on the terms of reference for the Review to improve the performance and financial sustainability of the out-of-home care system. The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal released an Interim Report on 10 September 2024, outlining preliminary findings on the current system's operation and the costs associated with providing out-of-home care. Revenue NSW: New EDR Client Details Requirement
Effective 18 November 2024, when processing an EDR assessment as an agent on behalf of another solicitor, conveyancer, or accountant, additional client details will be required:
- Client (firm) name
- Contact person
- Email
- Phone number
This will enable Revenue NSW to directly contact the relevant party if a transaction is selected for audit or requires debt recovery.
