2023 Law Society Council Election – Hard Copy Voting
With the 2023 Council election around the corner, members are reminded that printed ballot papers and hard copy voting instructions will only be provided to members who request them. Requests must be received no later than COB 31 August 2023 by filling out and submitting this form here.

Specialist Accreditation Conference 2023 - Last chance to register
Registration for the Specialist Accreditation Conference closes soon. Attendees will receive 10 CPD units per specialist stream, with six hours of live in-person and four hours of online webinars. Conference sessions will be recorded and made available after the conference. Register now.
Three new Magistrates appointed
Three solicitors with extensive experience across a range of legal areas have been elevated to the bench of the NSW Local Court.  Gina Towney, Timothy Khoo and Cathy Tawagi bring a wealth of knowledge to the NSW Local Court, having worked in a variety of jurisdictions and specialist areas. The three will be sworn in at the Downing Centre Local Court (courtroom 5.2) at 9am on the following days:
  • Tuesday 8 August: Gina Towney
  • Wednesday 9 August: Timothy Khoo
  • Thursday 10 August: Cathy Tawagi
'Enduring Courts in Changing Times' Conference
The Australian Academy of Law, the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration (AIJA) and the Australian Law Journal are very pleased to present a conference on “Enduring Courts in Changing Times” from 8 to 10 September at the Supreme Court in Sydney. The conference will cover a number of topics, with the past and future relationship between indigenous peoples and the courts a matter of particular emphasis. Register here.
Proposed changes to Children’s Court listing arrangements
The Children’s Court plans to introduce a new circuit in the New England region from Monday 15 January 2024. The proposed listing arrangements are listed here.
Appointments of Scott Nixon SC and Anthony McGrath SC
Scott Nixon SC and Anthony McGrath SC have been appointed to the Supreme Court of New South Wales, both to sit in the Equity Division. 
Formal ceremonies to mark these occasions will be held in Banco Court on level 13, as follows: 
  • Nixon SC - Tuesday 8 August 2023 at 9.15am
  • McGrath SC - Tuesday 15 August 2023 at 9.15am
The ceremonies will also be livestreamed with the link being posted on the Supreme Court website prior to each ceremony. 
2023 Terry Keaney Award winner – Eric Wilson SC
Eric Wilson SC, recently retired Public Defender, has been awarded the Terry Keaney Award. This honour is granted in recognition of dedication to the profession, excellence as a criminal defence lawyer, commitment to clients and concern for social justice.  It is named after a barrister who was an exemplar of those qualities but died before his time.
ACICA Essay Competition - deadline extended
The deadline for submissions to the annual essay competition for 2023 has been extended to 14 August 2023. Entries to the competition are invited and encouraged from students based in Australia who are studying a Bachelor, Juris Doctor or Masters level law degree in 2023, and from lawyers based in Australia in their first five years of practice. Information about this year’s competition may be found on the competition flyer and on the ACICA website.
John Koowarta Law Scholarship
Applications for the 2024 John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship are now open. Applications for the Koowarta Scholarship close COB Friday, 15 September 2023. The Application Form for the Koowarta Scholarship is attached to this memo, and further information is available online.
