2023 Law Society Council Election – Hard Copy Voting
With the 2023 Council election around the corner, members are reminded that printed ballot papers and hard copy voting instructions will only be provided to members who request them. Requests must be received no later than COB 31 August 2023 by filling out and submitting this form here.
Supreme Court of NSW – Online filing of uncontested probate applications
To assist with the transition to electronic filing, the Supreme Court has announced it will continue to accept paper-based uncontested probate and administration applications up to and including 6 October 2023. See the announcement here. The Law Society’s recent webinar with the Director & Prothonotary of the Supreme Court discussing the online probate system is now available here, and is complimentary for members. 

For members wishing to provide feedback to the Court on the online system:
Expressions of interest for appointment as a Magistrate to the Magistrates Court of the Australian Capital Territory
The Attorney General must seek expressions of interest for the position of magistrate by public notice and write to key ACT stakeholders, inviting them to suggest or nominate people who are suitably qualified for appointment. The selection process must be based on a consideration of possible candidates by the Attorney General having regard to the selection criteria stated in this determination. Information regarding these appointments is available on the Justice and Community Safety Directorate’s website.
Federal Court Employment and Industrial Law seminar
The Federal Court of Australia will deliver a seminar on Current Issues in the Practice of Employment and Industrial Law on 13 September 2023.  
Topics include: 
  • Statistics and practice in the Employment and Industrial Relations National Practice Area
  • Issues in adverse action and other Fair Work litigation
  • Employment law class actions, and
  • The positive duty to prevent sexual harassment.
The seminar will be held 5.30pm-7.30pm (EST) in person at the Sydney Registry of the Federal Court; also at the Melbourne and Adelaide Registries and live-streamed. RSVP to Leanne Lyons at ea.rangiahj@fedcourt.gov.au by Wednesday 6 September 2023, indicating whether you will be attending the event at Sydney Registry or online.
Liquor & Gaming NSW Legal Forum
Speakers from across the agency will share information and legal updates relating to liquor and gaming regulation. Breakfast will be provided, as well as the opportunity to engage with the Executive team. ​​​​​​

Sydney Drug Court is Expanding
Amendments to the Drug Court Regulation will take effect on Monday 21 August 2023. The amendments will increase the catchment area of the Sydney Drug Court to include the Local Government Areas of Bayside, Georges River, City of Randwick, Waverley and Woollahra. The Sydney Drug Court will sit two days per week from Wednesday 20 September 2023.
Ceremonial Farewell to Justice Darke
The Supreme Court is holding a ceremonial farewell to mark the retirement of Justice Darke as a Judge of the Equity Division on Wednesday 16 August 2023 in Court 13A from 9.15am. A live-stream link is available. 
Appointment of Anthony McGrath SC
Anthony McGrath SC has been appointed to the Supreme Court of New South Wales, to sit in the Equity Division. A formal ceremony to mark the occasion will be held in Banco Court on level 13, tomorrow (15 August) at 9:15am

Applications for the 2024 John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship are now open. Applications close COB Friday, 15 September 2023. Further information is ​​​​​​available online.
