Last week the Law Society Council published a statement in support of enshrining in the Australian Constitution an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Council’s decision in no way purports to tell members how they should vote. 2023 Law Society Council Election – Hard Copy Voting
With the 2023 Council election around the corner, members are reminded that printed ballot papers and hard copy voting instructions will only be provided to members who request them. Requests must be received no later than COB 31 August 2023 by filling out and submitting this form here.
Rolling Lists 2024
Rolling lists will be conducted in the Sydney Registry from 11 to 22 March 2024 for legacy family law matters ready for final hearing in both the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 1) and (Division 2). This will assist the Courts to continue to finalise the remainder of the legacy pending caseload as soon as possible.
The Rolling Lists will be led by the Case Management Judges for the Sydney Registry:
  • The Honourable Justice Peter Campton (Division 1)
  • Her Honour Judge Kylie Beckhouse (Division 2)
A notice to the profession with the details of the Rolling Lists will be distributed once the matters to be included in the lists have been selected.
Sydney Drug Court is Expanding
Amendments to the Drug Court Regulation took effect on Monday 21 August 2023. The amendments increased the catchment area of the Sydney Drug Court to include the Local Government Areas of Bayside, Georges River, City of Randwick, Waverley and Woollahra. The Sydney Drug Court will sit two days per week from Wednesday 20 September 2023.
Sixth Symposium on Child Sexual Abuse Prevention
This sixth Perth Symposium will be part of Western Australia’s Child Protection Week and will be officially opened by His Excellency the Governor of Western Australia, Chris Dawson, AC APM, followed by an address by the Federal Attorney General, Mr. Mark Dreyfus KC MP. The theme is the impact, treatment and support for all family members where child sexual abuse has occurred or may occur. Liquor & Gaming NSW Legal Forum
Speakers from across the agency will share information and legal updates relating to liquor and gaming regulation. Breakfast will be provided, as well as the opportunity to engage with the Executive team. ​​​​​​

Current Issues in the Practice of Employment and Industrial Law
Judges of the Federal Court of Australia are inviting practitioners to the “Current Issues in the Practice of Employment and Industrial Law” seminar. This will include:
  • Statistics and practice in the Employment and Industrial Relations National Practice Area
  • Issues in adverse action and other Fair Work litigation
  • Employment law class actions
  • The positive duty to prevent sexual harassment

Time: 5.30 pm to 7.00 pm (Eastern Standard Time)
3.30 pm in Perth; and 5.00 pm in Adelaide and Darwin
Venue: Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide registries of the Federal Court and streamed nationally via the Federal Court of Australia’s YouTube channel.
Drinks: Attendees in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide are invited to remain for drinks after the presentation.

Reissued Practice Note SC EQ 12 – Real Property List
The Practice Note has been reissued and commenced on 18 August 2023. Changes made include: the Court’s expectations in respect of alternative dispute resolution, the requirements for submitting consent orders and the procedures for remote appearances, interlocutory applications, listing matters for hearing and the usual order for hearing in Annexure A.
