New single digital platform will launch for motor accidents users from 19 June 2023
The Commission’s new single digital dispute resolution platform called ‘Pathway’ is scheduled to launch for Motor Accidents staff, decision makers and users in the week commencing 19 June 2023. Commission staff will commence using the platform on Monday 19 June 2023. Parties and decision makers will commence using the platform on Tuesday 20 June 2023. Consultation with the legal profession regarding cheque usage
The Reserve Bank Payments System Board will continue working with financial institutions and the government to support the transition away from cheques. In light of this, the Law Society would like to understand what support we can offer the profession and seek your insights by 31 July 2023. Complete the survey here.
12th LAWASIA Employment Law Conference

Updated ASIC Regulatory Guide 78, Breach Reporting by Australian Financial Services Licensees
Practitioners are reminded that on 27 April 2023, ASIC issued the updated Regulatory Guide 78, Breach Reporting by Australian Financial Services Licensees (RG 78). The updates include:
  • clarifying the circumstances in which licensees may group multiple reportable situations into one report to ASIC;
  • new guidance on the information to include when licensees describe a reportable situation; and    
  • new guidance for licensees on ASIC’s expectations when licensees are providing updates related to a reported breach.

Surcharge purchaser duty and surcharge land tax update (international tax treaties)
Further to the announcement made on 21 February 2023, Revenue NSW has now identified India, Japan, Norway and Switzerland as additional nations which have international tax treaties that may impact surcharge liability. Refunds may be available for surcharge payments made on or after 1 January 2021 (previously 1 July 2021). Read more.

Revenue Legislation Amendment Act 2023
The Act commences on 1 July 2023 and amends the Duties Act 1997 by removing a concession in the amount of duty payable by a public landholder, and will be applicable to transactions completed after 1 July 2023, irrespective of when the relevant agreement was entered into. The Act also amends the Land Tax Management Act 1956 to provide for an extension of time during which unoccupied land may be treated as a person’s principal place of residence.
