A healthy profession, well into the future

Shortly before Easter, I spoke on behalf of the solicitor branch of NSW legal profession at the farewell ceremonial sitting for Chief Justice James Allsop AC as he retired from the Federal Court of Australia. His honour’s leadership of that Court over the past decade was marked by a deep understanding of the work solicitors do, as well as a keen determination to address any problems as and when they were required. Continue reading >

NT career opportunity: Assistant Director Fixed Up To 4 Years
As a key member of the Director of Public Prosecutions Executive, the role will operate at strategic and operational levels and will play a critical role in the overall strategy, leadership and performance of the Director of Public Prosecutions. The position will provide high-level strategic, legal, policy and business advice and decision making across a range of matters; assist the Director in the corporate strategic leadership and efficient day-to-day running of the office, including management of human and financial resources across the Northern Territory. Thought Leadership: A NSW Climate Act?
At a national level, Australia now has legislation that sets targets for emission reductions and requires progress checks under the Climate Change Act 2022 (Cth). NSW does not have a similar type of accountability for state-level targets, nor a framework for processes by which government and standalone agencies make relevant decisions. Part 4.2 of the Uniform Law establishes a comprehensive framework to regulate the handling of trust money by legal practitioners. The principle aim of these provisions is to protect consumers by directing that funds held on trust are to be held in a secure environment, and ensuring there is a clear and transparent framework through which funds are released once checks and balances have been completed. The Commonwealth Government has announced their intention to work with the states and territories to extend the deadline to submit supporting documentation for existing off-the-plan and renovation applications. However, Treasury strongly encourages applicants to continue working to the existing 30 April 2023 deadline until further notice. Read more.

Planning certificate changes – new “Employment zone”
On 26 April 2023, the Business and Industrial zones in most local government areas will be replaced with new Employment zones. For further information see FAQs prepared by the Department of Planning and Environment. The provision of planning certificates by local councils may be impacted due to system changes.
