A new term. A time to reflect, a time to honour
I was honoured this morning to share in the first two of several religious services over the next two weeks to welcome the new law term. Whether we are religious or not, this time of year provides lawyers an opportunity to reflect on why we have chosen the law as our profession. My response to that is likely to be a common one; helping people to solve their problems and looking for ways to improve the justice system. Continue reading >

Voluntary Assisted Dying Board - Expressions of interest are now open
|
NSW Health is planning for the implementation of voluntary assisted dying to ensure it is safe, accessible and aligns with the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2022. The NSW Government is currently inviting applications from people interested in becoming a member of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Board, which will have important advisory and decision-making functions when voluntary assisted dying becomes available in NSW. Shared Equity Home Buyer Helper is now live and open for applications The NSW Government’s scheme is aimed at supporting more residents to own their own homes by contributing up to 40 per cent of the purchase price for new dwellings and 30 per cent for established properties in exchange for an equivalent interest. This new initiative supports eligible buyers including single parents, singles 55 years of age or above, and first-home buyer key workers such as nurses, midwives, paramedics, teachers, early childhood educators and police officers. For more information see the Revenue NSW website which includes a self-assessment tool for interested buyers to check eligibility. A fact sheet has also been prepared.

Industrial Relations Commission Security Protocols Update
25 January 2023
The Commission, in consultation with the Sheriff’s office, have reviewed the security arrangements in place at the Commission in Parramatta and made some changes. These changes include the activation of the walk-through metal detector and the use of a hand-held metal detector by the Sheriff’s officers. Persons attending the Commission premises at Parramatta, including the Registry staff, will be required to submit to the metal detectors. Exemptions apply pursuant to the Court Security Act 2005 for judicial officers, Sheriff’s officers, and custodial officers in full uniform who have lawful custody of a person at the time. Read more.
