PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Positive law reform: the Law Society’s State Election platform

One of the most important duties for a new President is to meet with key stakeholders in the justice system and I’ve very much appreciated the opportunity to start that process in the past couple of weeks. These meetings enable me to listen to their perspectives and continue the Law Society’s advocacy for increased and ongoing resources for our courts, including more judicial officers and modern digital infrastructure, to tackle the enormous volume of cases. Continue reading >

Islamic Opening of Law Term Service - 2023
The Muslim Legal Network NSW will be hosting the annual Opening of Law Term service, as follows:

Seeking early and mid-career lawyers
The Law Society of NSW is seeking NSW-based early and/or mid-career lawyers who work in various practice areas and organisations to participate in online focus groups.
 
The focus groups are part of a research project called Designing Gender Equality into the Future of Work, which is funded by the Australian Research Council's Linkage Scheme. Read more.
World Pride events: save the date
The Law Society will be running two events for LGBTQIA+ members and allies to celebrate World Pride. On 23 February, join us for drinks, canapes and networking in collaboration with Pride in Law. On 3 March, hear renowned gay activist and Former Justice Edwin Cameron from South Africa deliver the Pride Address over breakfast. More info available shortly.
Exchanging Ideas Symposium: Constitutional Reform, Nation Building and Treaty Making Processes
The Judicial Commission, Law Society & Bar Association will host an Exchanging Ideas Symposium on 4 February 2023 at the Powerhouse Ultimo to discuss constitutional reform, treaties & truth-telling. Presenters include the Hon Robert French AC, Professor Megan Davis, the Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP, Thomas Mayor, Teela Reid & Tony McAvoy SC. Register here.
Voluntary Assisted Dying Board
The Voluntary Assisted Dying Board will be established by the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act, and include reporting on the operation of the Act, and deciding whether to approve or refuse voluntary assisted dying substance authorisations. It will be supported administratively by Health. The Deputy Chair and Chair the Board are required to be legal practitioners of 7 years standing (or judges).
