Celebrating the role of solicitors in the community
As a profession, solicitors do not sit back, observe, and become mere critics. We get involved – in representing our clients, in protecting the rule of law, and in promoting access to justice. As we know all too well, our role in defending the rights of all and ensuring access to justice is never easy. It is rigorous, demanding and complex. That's why, events which bring the profession together, such as the Opening of Law Term, new admission ceremonies, swearings in for new appointments to the bench, and occasions to mark retirement from the judiciary are so incredibly valuable. They provide a moment in time to acknowledge contribution, celebrate success, reflect on achievements, and set or recalibrate our goals. Last week’s Opening of Law Term Dinner in NSW Parliament, attended by more than 270 members of the legal community, was one such occasion. This event affirmed that, as a profession and as a Law Society, we have much to celebrate and be proud of. Continue reading

Corrective Services NSW – legal practitioner personal addresses
Corrective Services NSW has recently identified that the personal address of legal practitioners who have visited inmates may have been taken from identification presented by the practitioner, and that the personal address will be produced when inmate profile reports are generated. To check the address that has been recorded against your professional details, and make any necessary amendments, please call Emily on 02 9289 2703 weekdays between 9:00am-3:00pm. Alternatively email custodial.corrections@justice.nsw.gov.au and provide your details and practice address. Further information can be found here.

Legal Services Council notice
In January 2019, the Legal Services Council (LSC) made a Uniform General Rule on Indexation to ensure the Victorian and NSW Legal Services Commissioners, and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, maintain their jurisdiction to determine costs disputes in line with inflation. From 1 July 2019, the new rule, r 111 A of the Legal Profession Uniform General Rules 2015, will apply to ss 291-293 of the Uniform Law and s 99 of the Legal Profession Uniform Application Act 2014 (Vic). Position vacancy – ACT Integrity Commissioner
Following the passage of the ACT Integrity Commission Act 2018 late last year, the part-time position of ACT Integrity Commissioner will be advertised. The appointee must have been a Supreme or Federal Court judge; a justice of the High Court; or a lawyer of at least 10 years’ standing. A seven-year appointment term is available with remuneration and entitlements aligned to those available to Federal Court and ACT Supreme Court judges. Find out more
