NSW COVID-19 statistics
NSW recorded 1,257 locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night from 137,668 tests. Sadly, seven deaths were recorded in that same time period. Our thoughts are with their loved ones. NSW Health has reported that 21,892 vaccines were administered in the same time period. More information on today’s statistics here.

Local Court COVID-19 update
Following the lifting of lockdown restrictions in parts of regional NSW, the Chief Magistrate has issued Memo 22. This includes guidance on masks, defended hearings, matters listed for sentence and more.

District Court COVID-19 update
Jury trials and in person appearances have now resumed in the following regional District Courts:  Armidale/Tamworth; Lismore/Grafton; Coffs Harbour; Albury/Griffith; Port Macquarie; and Wagga Wagga. The four square metre rule and the mandatory wearing of face masks will apply.

Resumption of Defended Custody Hearings
Corrective Services NSW are working closely with Courts and Tribunal Services regarding the resumption of defended custody hearings by AVL, and are offering solicitors who are having difficulty obtaining instructions for this purpose the ability to request a priority appointment with their client in custody. Priority legal visit bookings can be facilitated by Corrective Service NSW by emailing DefendantHearingAVL@dcj.nsw.gov.au for those defended custody hearings listed within the next eight weeks by the Local Court. 

NSW Queensland border bubble reinstated
As of today, northern border residents can cross the Queensland border for essential work and essential reasons with the reinstatement of the border bubble. An agreement to include 12 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the border bubble was reached following discussions between the NSW and Queensland Governments. The 12 LGAs included in the border bubble are Ballina, Byron Bay, City of Lismore, Clarence Valley, Glen Innes Severn, Gwydir, Inverell, Kyogle, Moree Plains, Richmond Valley, Tenterfield and Tweed. NSW residents can cross the border for essential work, school, essential shopping, medical reasons or caring for people.

District Court Judge
The Attorney General is seeking applications from qualified persons for appointment as a Judge of the District Court of NSW under the District Court Act 1973. Applications close Monday 4 October 2021 (10.00 pm) and must be lodged electronically. More here.
