2021 Annual Members Dinner

In recognition of International Day of People with Disability, the Law Society's Diversity and Inclusion Committee is hosting a panel event on Thursday 2 December, exploring leadership and participation in the law of people living with disabilities in a post-COVID world. Find out more.

COVID-19 UPDATES
NSW COVID-19 statistics
NSW Health confirmed urgent genomic testing revealed two overseas travellers have been infected with the new Omicron COVID-19 variant of concern. Both passengers came to Sydney from southern Africa on the evening of Saturday November 27. The two positive cases, who were asymptomatic, are now in isolation in the Special Health Accommodation. In the 24 hours to 8pm last night, NSW recorded 150 new cases of COVID-19 from 47,175 tests. 92.4 per cent of NSW residents aged 16 and over have received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Omicron variant: changes for returning travellers to NSW
The Federal and State Governments have announced new precautions for returning travellers due to detections of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. As of midnight on Saturday 27 November, all travellers arriving in NSW who have been in South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini, Malawi, and the Seychelles during the 14 day period before their arrival in NSW must enter hotel quarantine for 14 days, irrespective of their vaccination status. All travellers who have been in any other overseas country during the 14 day period before their arrival in NSW must travel directly to their place of residence or accommodation and isolate for 72 hours, pending further health advice. Anyone who has already arrived in NSW who has been in any of the nine African countries within the previous 14 days must immediately get tested and isolate for 14 days, and call NSW Health on 1800 943 553. District Court update
The District Court from Monday 15 November 2021 commenced operating under the 1.5m spacing and 2m2 rule principles, which includes jury trials. Practitioners are reminded to continue to check the District Court website for up to date operational procedures during COVID-19.

Practitioners are to refer to Practice Note(s) Criminal Practice Notes 23 (Resumption of Jury Trials and in person appearances in Judge Alone Trials), 24 (Applications for leave for in person appearances in Trials and Sentence Hearings of WHS Prosecutions), 25 (Applications for Leave for In Person Appearances in Sentence Proceedings) and Civil Practice Note 16 (Applications for leave for in person appearances in Civil Trials).

Conveyancing alert – Central Coast Council system upgrade – rates and property certificates
The Law Society has become aware that a systems upgrade for Central Coast Council will impact upon the rates system and property certificate requests, including the ability to obtain zoning certificates, between 7 December 2021 – 20 December 2021. Council advises that all certificates and applications will be able to be ordered again from Monday 20 December but there may still be some delays to certificate and application processing. For further information please see Central Coast Council - Property and Rating system upgrade. The Law Society will advise members if alternative options are made available by the Council.
