The challenges of ‘net zero’ emissions and future of cyber security

The increase in people working online from home during the pandemic has seen cybercrime increase in Australia by 13% in the past year. In September 2021, the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) reported it had received one cybercrime report every eight minutes over the 12 months to June 30, 2021.

Winner of Terry Keaney Award
Former solicitor Ms Rebecca McMahon has been awarded the 2021 Terry Keaney Award. The criteria for the award are dedication to the profession, excellence as a criminal defence lawyer, commitment to clients and concern for social justice. Ms McMahon was a solicitor for 18 years, before her recent call to the bar. Ms McMahon was a hardworking member of the Law Society’s Criminal Law Committee for many years, and was a founding chair of the Bugmy Bar Book Project. The award was presented at a small ceremony due to COVID-19 restrictions.
International Day of People with Disability
In recognition of International Day of People with Disability, the Law Society's Diversity and Inclusion Committee is hosting a panel event on Thursday 2 December, exploring leadership and participation in the law of people living with disabilities in a post-COVID world. Register.

Applications for Review in the Federal Circuit and Family Court
This update provides the profession with information about jurisprudential and other developments that relate to Applications for Review of registrar decisions, since the commencement of the new case management pathway in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (the Court).

Commencing 1 September 2021, all Applications for Review are managed nationally and may be heard by a local or interstate judge, including the Chief Justice/Chief Judge and Deputy Chief Justice/Deputy Chief Judge. Read more.
