PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The challenges of ‘net zero’ emissions and future of cyber security

Introducing our newest FLIP initiative

The increase in people working online from home during the pandemic has seen cybercrime increase in Australia by 13 per cent in the past year. In September 2021, the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) reported it had received one cybercrime report every eight minutes over the 12 months to June 30, 2021.

Our inaugural FLIP Tech Tools webcast on Monday 22 November 2021 will focus on cyber and data security. FLIP Tech Tools aims to provide members with practical help in identifying the best approach and tech solutions for their legal practice.

The “FLIP Tech Tools: Cyber Crime & Data Security” session will include case studies, tech tool provider demonstrations from cyber and data security providers, a panel discussion and a Q&A. Topics covered will include:

  • Classification of cyber and data security tools
  • Strategies you should have in place to ensure cyber and data safety
  • Questions to ask a cybersecurity provider to ensure you get the best solution for your practice
  • How to train your staff in cybersecurity.

I encourage you to register now and make cybersecurity a priority for your practice.

The legal aspects of climate change action

The 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) has wrapped up in Glasgow with a global agreement to accelerate action on climate this decade. The Australian Government has made a commitment to reach ‘net zero’ emissions by 2050, and, together with state and local governments, Australian businesses are setting emissions goals.

Given the extent of the changes this will require for our economy and workforce, it is important that legal practitioners understand how they can assist clients in navigating the complex legal and compliance issues of a low carbon economy while ensuring a just transition.

This will be the focus of our last Thought Leadership event of the year – “Getting to Net Zero: the role of the legal profession in ensuring a just transition” – which will be held as an online event on Monday 29 November 2021.

The Law Society and NSW Young Lawyers will bring together four leading Australian experts, Dr Cameron Kelly, Jonathon Hunyor, Rachel Walmsley and Christine Tran, to discuss the legal aspects of climate pledges. They will focus on the role of legal professionals in achieving ‘net zero’ whilst considering the economic and social costs and opportunities.

I hope you can join us for this important and timely discussion.

Juliana Warner, President, Law Society of NSW
