Upcoming events and celebrating the third anniversary of the Australian vote for marriage equality |
Looking ahead, there are a number of key online events on the events calendar which will be of interest for members including our FLIP Virtual Regional Roadshow this week, a forum on Modern Slavery next week, and Specialist Accreditation Week from 23-27 November.
Each day of the Specialist Accreditation event will focus on substantive law topics delivered by experts within a specific area of specialisation. This year’s five specialist streams are: criminal law, property law, personal injury, commercial litigation and business law. The full program for the week is now available and registrations are now open (with discounts available for multi-stream registration).
Last week, the Law Society was extremely fortunate to have Tiernan Brady join a panel discussion celebrating the third anniversary of the Australian vote for marriage equality, hosted by the Society’s Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Committee.
Tiernan led the successful Irish referendum campaign, which saw Ireland become the first country in the world to introduce marriage equality by a public vote, and eventually became Executive Director for the equally successful Australian campaign.
He and his fellow panellists, Australian Human Rights Lawyer Georgie Burke and Mel Schwerdt, Co-Chair of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, provided some valuable reflections on the Australian campaign and the impact of this momentous change in the law, including in relation to family law and how to build an inclusive practice
If you did not see the Celebrating Marriage Equality panel discussion, you can now register for the on-demand webcast. Congratulations to all involved in this event, including our panel facilitator, Ronan MacSweeney, Chair of the D&I Committee and Law Society Councillor.
On a final note, congratulations to the Law Society’s LSJ team who have taken out the Mumbrella Publish Awards “Association or Member Organisation Publication of the Year” for the fourth year in a row. LSJ also won “Magazine Cover of the Year” for its May 2020 cover featuring a COVID-safe Lady Justice statue. The judges described the cover as “visually colourful, clever, relevant and impactful”.
