What does a best practice Board look like? As we celebrate the Law Society’s 180th birthday in 2022, an eye to the future is key to the ongoing success of our co-regulatory membership organisation.

As many of you know, this year the Law Society Council resolved to undertake a review of its board governance structure.

The Law Society’s Constitution requires that we regularly review the composition of the Council. In particular,  the Law Society is required to report to the 2022 AGM on whether Council Reserved Positions reflect adequately the composition of the Solicitor Membership of the Law Society, together with any recommendation the Council believes appropriate to amend the Constitution to reflect the composition of the membership. ​​​​Continue reading >

Special directions for consent in sexual assault trials
The Crimes Legislation Amendment (Sexual Consent Reforms) Act 2021 commences on 1 June 2022.   Changes to the Criminal Procedure Act 1986 affect certain sexual assault trials commencing from that date.  An advance copy of the chapter of the NSW Judicial Commission’s Criminal Trial Courts Bench Book dealing with these changes is available here.
