PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Supporting our members in the practise of law, now and in the future

This time 12 months ago, all of us were coming to terms with the harsh realities of the global COVID-19 pandemic as the first of many dramatic measures were announced by the federal government - the closure of international borders to all non-citizens and non-residents, the requirement for all returning overseas travellers to self-isolate for 14 days and a 100-person cap on public gatherings. It was the beginning of a year of immense challenges, constant change and great uncertainty. Continue reading >

Attention migration lawyers
With changes under the Migration Amendment (Regulation of Migration Agents) Act 2020 (Cth) commencing on 22 March 2021, law practices that handle migration matters are reminded they can register for the Law Society’s Solicitor Referral Service. The SRS connects prospective clients with a solicitor by providing contact details for three law practices tailored to the client’s request including area of law, geographical location or language spoken. Law practices working in the migration area can register for the SRS by calling 02 9929 0396 or emailing A2J@lawsociety.com.au. Information about the regulatory impact of the new legislation is on the Law Society website.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – Statutory compliance by 31 March 2021
Practitioners are reminded that the 2020-21 CPD year concludes 31 March 2021. CPD compliance is a statutory requirement, governed by the Legal Profession Uniform Continuing Professional Development (Solicitors) Rules 2015. It is a practitioner’s individual responsibility to maintain accurate records evidencing their engagement in CPD activities and to satisfy themselves that they have properly complied with the CPD requirements. Your records serve to ensure that you do not risk making a false declaration in your practising certificate renewal application. Please review the Law Society’s CPD information to ensure that you can comply with the CPD requirements by 31 March 2021. You may search available CPD courses through LawInform. In the special circumstances arising from COVID-19, the Law Society understands that solicitors may need to exceed the 5-unit cap on private study of audio/visual material to complete their CPD units. Please read the detailed information provided on the Law Society website. If you anticipate still not being able to meet your CPD obligations and need to apply for an extension or exemption, please read more.
