PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Some legal problems require recognised experts in their chosen field

Our profession has the privilege of helping all sorts of people solve an astonishing variety of legal problems. On any given day in my practice, I’d be advising on an unfair dismissal claim, drafting a will and helping a farming business work out a succession plan to ensure it continues to thrive into the next generation. 

Some legal problems are more complex than others and The Law Society of NSW’s Specialist Accreditation program provides practitioners with an interest in one of 13 areas of law the ability to be recognised as an expert in their chosen field. The path to Specialist Accreditation is exacting and rightly so.

Member Awards nominations are now open
The Law Society of NSW's inaugural Member Awards will highlight the great work happening in the profession, recognising excellence in our membership across a range of categories. Nominate someone you know or nominate yourself.

Applications close Wednesday 24 August. All finalists will be invited to attend the Law Society Member Awards Night at the Hilton Sydney on 5 September, where the winners will be announced. Nominate or apply now. 
Staying Well in the Law: Alcohol and alcohol use problems
Alcohol use problems are common in Australia, where alcohol is cheap, readily available, and heavily promoted. Nearly 1 in 4 Australians will develop an alcohol use disorder at some point in their life.

In our next Staying Well in the Law event, Clinical Psychologist and Principal Research fellow Matthew Gullo will be explaining the biology, beliefs and behaviours associated with alcohol use, how to identify when alcohol use has become problematic, and evidence-based management strategies. CTP Scheme: Work Value Assessment
The State Insurance Regulatory Authority and DGT Costs Lawyers are seeking any final submissions of data from lawyers to the work value assessment of regulated legal fees in the NSW CTP Scheme. Contact DGT Costs Lawyers at costing@dgt.com.au.
Ceremonial Sitting of Judge Driver
A ceremonial sitting of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 2) will be held in Courtroom 1, Level 21, Law Courts Building, Queen’s Square, 184 Phillip Street, Sydney on Tuesday, 9 August 2022 at 4.30pm to farewell his Honour Judge Rolf Driver. To attend the ceremony live stream click here.
