Solicitors as moral compasses and new consent laws

The Law Society recently hosted an important panel discussion on the role of solicitors as the moral compass for their clients, featuring Dr Simon Longstaff, Executive Director of the Ethics Centre, Daniel Csillag, Senior Legal Counsel and General Manager, Company Secretariat, ASX, and Linden Barnes, Senior Ethics Solicitor at the Law Society. The focus was primarily on inhouse solicitors, where the client is also the employer. However, it is a role which can arise for any solicitor, whatever their area of practice. Continue reading >

New SIRA Chief Executive
Adam Dent has been appointed the new Chief Executive of the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA). Mr Dent will be joining SIRA from his current role as the Chief Executive Officer of the NSW Trustee & Guardian. Read more

Contract for the sale and purchase of business – 2021 edition
A new 2021 edition of the Contract for the sale and purchase of business, with a summary of the main changes from the previous 2015 edition, is available here.

Real Property Amendment (Certificates of Title) Act 2021 
The Act has received assent and will enable the cancellation of paper certificates of title (CTs) in NSW and the abolition of the current CoRD holder consent process. The Office of the Registrar General has advised that the NSW Government is working towards cancelling CTs and CoRD on 1 October 2021. Practitioners should also note that the mandate of the final batch of residual documents is planned to also occur on 1 October 2021, meaning all dealings will then fall within the mandate for electronic registration. Land Tax COVID-19 relief applications closing 31 May 2021
The deadline for applications for the land tax COVID-19 relief scheme is 31 May 2021. This scheme provides land tax relief for commercial and residential landowners who provide a rent reduction to a tenant who is experiencing financial distress as a result of COVID-19. This deadline applies to relief for both the 2020 and 2021 land tax years. Read more.
