PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

New parliamentary inquiry into family, domestic and sexual violence to include impact of COVID-19

News that the Federal Government is to set up a new parliamentary inquiry into family, domestic and sexual violence, and include the impact of the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders amongst its terms of reference, is greatly welcomed. Particularly given the failure of the most recent senate inquiry into domestic violence.

The inquiry by the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs came under fire from all fronts, including one of its own committee members, after delivering its report three months ahead of its 13 August deadline and failing to hold hearings, seek submissions or hear from witnesses. Continue reading >

Resumption of defended hearings in the Local Court of NSW – information for solicitors
The Law Society is working with the NSW Local Court to assist the profession return to work in defended matters as soon as possible. It is in the interests of the Court and solicitors for this to occur. Solicitors should familiarise themselves with the Chief Magistrate’s Memoranda 9, 10 and 11 in this regard. Read more.

Reminder: Cooling off warning notices from 2 June 2020
The Office of the Registrar General has published a timely reminder that the transitional provision relating to cooling off warning notices ends on 1 June 2020. From and including 2 June 2020, all residential contracts for sale will need to use the new form of cooling off warning notice. The required form of notice is included in the contract for the sale and purchase of land 2019 edition.

NSW Land Registry Services (NSW LRS) fees for 2020/2021
The NSW LRS fees for products and services involving land titles, plans, property information and the Water Access Licence Register will change for the 2020/2021 financial year. See NSW LRS Announcement and the 2020/2021 NSW LRS Fee Update.  Note that the 2019/2020 fees will be applied to land title dealings and plans lodged before 1 July 2020 but not finalised until after 1 July 2020.
