Happy NAIDOC Week

This week is an important opportunity for all Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to come together, celebrate and acknowledge the achievements, rich history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The conversation we will be having this NAIDOC week is with Professor Megan Davis, Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous and Professor of Law at UNSW, and one of the architects of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.  Professor Davis will join with Law Society CEO, Sonja Stewart, in an online discussion about Professor Davis’s incredible career and her fight for Indigenous People's recognition within the democratic society of Australia. “In Conversation with Professor Megan Davis” will be webcast live at 12:30pm tomorrow (Tuesday 6 July) and is complimentary for all members. I hope you can join us.

And keep an eye out for the Law Society’s very special edition of LSJ filled with Indigenous voices and stories. The “Blakout” issue highlights the work of the legal profession, particularly Indigenous lawyers, across the many areas of law that impact Indigenous people and their communities. It’s a fantastic read and visually stunning.

To keep the celebrations going, the Law Society’s Dining Room Delivers service has a bush tucker inspired menu this Friday, featuring lemon myrtle and saltbush roasted chicken, native pepperberry and a lemon aspen roasted winter vegetable medley and Davidson plum and macadamia frangipane tart. Dining Room Delivers has become a much anticipated Friday night tradition for my family – more so now with stay at home orders in place – and I am really looking forward to this week’s hamper.

Looking ahead, on Wednesday July 7, the Law Society’s Employment Law Committee is hosting the first of two webcasts on the “Fundamentals of the Fair Work Commission” with Vice President of the Fair Work Commission (FWC), Joe Catanzariti AM.  Designed for practitioners with limited exposure to the FWC or those needing a refresher, the webcasts will outline what practitioners need to consider when acting and appearing in matters before the FWC. In session one, Vice President Catanzariti and Employment Law Committee Co-Chair, Nathan Keats, will explore the basics of unfair dismissal, general protections and advocacy in the Fair Work Commission. You can find more details about both sessions and register on our events portal.

Enjoy your week, stay well and stay safe.

Juliana Warner, President, the Law Society of NSW
