President's message
Opening of Law Term 2020
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Ceremonies, services and events marking the official opening of law term in our state are fast approaching, including the Law Society’s Opening of Law Term Dinner at Parliament House, Sydney on 5 February.
As is tradition, the Chief Justice of NSW, The Hon Tom Bathurst AC, will deliver the opening address at the dinner, which is always a highlight of the evening. The event allows me the opportunity, as your 2020 President, to outline what I would like to achieve this year on behalf of the state’s 35,000 solicitors – something I am looking forward to immensely.
As well as celebrating a new year in the administration of justice, the Opening of Law Term Dinner is a rare opportunity to dine in Parliament’s Strangers Dining Room in the company of friends, colleagues, members of the legal profession and the judiciary. We still have tickets available, which can be purchased online, either individually or as a table of 10.
In the coming weeks, I will be attending a number of religious services at Catholic Cathedrals, an Anglican church, a Greek Orthodox Cathedral, a Jewish synagogue and a Mosque. While our courts are secular, these religious services have long been incorporated into the opening of the new law term and I am looking forward to attending them with fellow councillors, and members of the profession and judiciary.
Finally, as we as head towards the Australia Day holiday weekend, when we celebrate the shared values that bind us as a nation, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the great spirit of generosity that has prevailed during our bushfire disaster. I am certainly thankful for the massive outpouring of support that has come from all members of the community in response to the fires, including the state’s legal profession.
Richard Harvey, Law Society President
