PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Keeping the legal community connected when we need it the most

I start this week’s message with a sincere thank you to the many solicitors who have contacted me by email or posted on social media to express their gratitude to the Law Society for reducing the membership fees to $10 (plus GST) for 2020-21.

Our intent in reducing the membership fee so significantly was to provide members with both financial relief and a sense of certainty about remaining connected with our legal community at a time when we need it the most. During these testing times, I have certainly drawn strength from the warm words and messages of support that have been conveyed to me in response to the decision. Continue reading >

Practising certificate and membership renewals will open Tuesday 7 April 2020
Solicitors will receive an email tomorrow morning, Tuesday 7 April 2020, containing a link and information on how to renew their practising certificate and Law Society membership online.

The Federal Government update on
COVID-19
The Federal Government’s update on COVID-19 includes information about Easter holidays, religious services, commercial tenancies, and childcare and education. For more information on coronavirus and the Government’s response, please visit the Treasury or Australian Government websites.
Coronavirus business support
Dedicated support is available for businesses affected by COVID-19. Call 13 28 46 between 7am and 9pm, seven days a week. Alternatively, you can email or use webchat here.
Launch of Jobs Hub
The Morrison Government has launched a new Jobs Hub, supporting businesses and those Australians looking for work. An up-to-date list of businesses and organisations that are currently hiring, and how to contact them, can be found here.
JobKeeper information
The Government has introduced the JobKeeper payment to support employees and businesses.

Coronavirus app and WhatsApp channel
The Australian Government has released a Coronavirus app and WhatsApp channel. The App is available on both Android and iPhones. Visit the website to access the WhatsApp channel.

Public Health Act 2010
Breach of orders made under the Public Health Act 2010 is a criminal offence and attracts heavy penalties. These restrictions are enforceable under the Public Health (COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement) Order 2020, effective 31 March 2020, and the Public Health (COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement) Amendment Order 2020, effective 4 April 2020.

In order to ensure the health and safety of the public while maintaining the provision of justice, a new process has been implemented allowing authorised court users to appear in court by way of video conference to mention their matters. This allows any legal practitioner to appear in court from any location using their own device if approved by the court.
