Adapting for the benefit of our members

When our premises at 170 Phillip Street closed some weeks ago, we implemented a number of measures to ensure there would be minimal disruption to Law Society operations and services, with a focus on the PC and membership renewals process.

Practising certificate and membership renewals open
Online lodgements for 2020-21 practising certificate (PC) and membership renewals are now open. For those who did not renew online last year, we really encourage you to try and do so this year. If you need help, our registry team members are happy to walk you through the process over the telephone on (02) 9926 0156.

LawID needed for PC renewals
It would greatly assist the successful delivery of this year’s PC renewals process for all legal practitioners to ensure they have registered for a LawID. Activate yours today.
$5000 on the spot fine to protect all NSW workers
Anyone coughing or spitting on any worker will face a $5,000 on-the-spot fine with tough measures introduced to protect health care staff and police now extended to all workers. Health Minister Brad Hazzard said anyone at work or travelling to or from work would be protected, after several recent incidents involving retail and transport workers. Read more.
$140 million Bushfire Industry Recovery Package
The NSW Government today announced a $140m Bushfire Industry Recovery Package to support forestry, horticulture & agriculture industries impacted by recent bushfires.
Federal Safety Commissioner Guidance on COVID-19
This Guidance has been developed to provide information on COVID-19 to companies accredited under the Work Health and Safety Accreditation Scheme.  
Social Security (Coronavirus Economic Response  2020 Measures No. 9) – Explanatory Statement
The Coronavirus Economic Response Package Omnibus Act 2020 amended the Social Security Act 1991  to provide additional financial assistance to Australians financially impacted by the coronavirus. This determination has no operation after 31 December 2020.
Light up the dawn on ANZAC Day 2020
Australians are being encouraged to honour the service and sacrifice of our veterans and serving Defence personnel on ANZAC Day from home this year by watching the nationally broadcast Dawn Service from the Australian War Memorial and participating in the RSL’s #lightupthedawn.

COVID-19 at a glance
As at 3:00pm on 19 April 2020, a total of 6,606 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Australia, including 70 deaths. 4,230 have been reported as recovered from COVID-19. Over the past week, there has been an average of 42 new cases reported each day. Of the newly reported cases, the majority have been from NSW. View the infographic.
Business Council of Australia COVID-19 paper
The Business Council has today released a COVID-19 paper outlining how business will play a crucial part in a risk management approach to returning greater freedoms to Australians, including normal day-to-day business and personal activities.

The Parliamentary Counsel's Office is requesting feedback on the Beta version of the NSW legislation website. Layouts are slightly changed, and new features and functionality have been added. Important limitations are listed on the home page, including that content is not complete and not current. Note that PDFs and a tab to the Gazette will be added. NSW Land Registry Services to relocate from Queen Square in July 2020
NSW LRS has confirmed that in July 2020 it will relocate its Lodgment Office from 1 Prince Albert Road, Queens Square, to Level 30, 175 Liverpool Street, Sydney. The move follows the relocation of NSW LRS’ head office to 175 Liverpool Street, Sydney in May 2019. The date of relocation will be confirmed closer to the time. Read more.
