Council Elections and the generosity of our profession

The generosity of our profession runs deep. Last week whilst attending the Bankstown and District Law Society AGM Dinner, members voted to donate $1,000 to my President’s Charity, Sober in the Country. With just over a quarter of our solicitors working in suburban Sydney, it has been both a pleasure and a priority for me to attend as many regional law society meetings as I can. Over the next few weeks, I will be travelling to Orange, Ballina, Broken Hill and Parramatta to meet with more of our members and see how the Law Society can best assist them to thrive in practice. Continue reading >

Election of Councillors – Notice of Forthcoming Election
There are six vacancies to be filled in the upcoming 2022 Council Election: one Country Councillor, one Suburban Councillor, one Corporate Councillor, one Large Firm Councillor, and two Councillors (with each position for a 3-year term). The seventh vacancy is to be filled by the appointment of a Young Lawyer Councillor for a 1-year term in accordance with clause 12.1.1 of the Law Society’s Constitution. Nominations for the 2022 Council Election must be received by the Company Secretary of the Law Society not later than 4.00pm on Monday 19 September 2022. View the notice of the forthcoming election
Diary Note: Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting of The Law Society of New South Wales will be held on Thursday 27 October 2022 at 4.30pm.
Conversation on current issues in the practice of employment and industrial law
Chaired by the Hon. Justice Mordy Bromberg, this year's presentation will deliver an excellent line up of legal practitioners speaking on a range of topical subjects. The event will be held on Thursday 22 September 2022, hosted from Sydney and Perth, and streamed nationally via Cisco. Solicitors needed for the Downing Centre Local Court duty solicitors roster
The City of Sydney Law Society seeks expressions of interest from solicitors with extensive experience in the Local Court or Courts generally, to join a monthly roster of Duty Solicitors acting at the Downing Centre Local Court. Contact Anthony Restuccia
New Course – Best practice in drafting parenting matters
This new half-day workshop will focus upon drafting the suite of documents now required to start a parenting case under the new Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Family Law) Rules 2021 and will provide practical insights into how to make this process less daunting for solicitors and more cost effective for clients. 2022 Elimination of Violence Against Women Fundraising Dinner
The 2022 Elimination of Violence Against Women Fundraising dinner in the NSW Parliament's Strangers Dining Room will take place on Wednesday 23 November 2022 at 6.30 for a 7pm start. This year's beneficiaries are the Bayside Women's Shelter and Safe Houses for women and children in the far west of NSW, Brewarrina, Lightening Ridge and Walgett. LGBTQI+ Women in Law Panel Event​​​​
DWL is pleased to announce its inaugural LGBTIQ+ Women in Law Panel Event. The event brings together students as well as practitioners in the law who identify as LGBTIQ+ to discuss their experiences and insights about being a queer individual in the law. The event will be sponsored by and held at Clayton Utz on September 8 at 5.30 pm with an option to attend virtually. Diverse parents and carers panel event​​​​
DWL is pleased to announce its inaugural Diverse Parents and Carers Panel Event which will focus on the challenges faced by diverse women with caring responsibilities progressing within the legal profession. This event will feature a panel-led interactive discussion on relevant issues including overcoming barriers, managing expectations, navigating parenthood, and seeking support from workplaces and other networks. You are welcome to bring your children and/or support person to the event which will take place at Ashurst at 5.00pm on 21 September with an option to attend virtually. Register by 9 September here.

Conveyancing (Sale of Land) Regulation 2022 and the Contract for the sale and purchase of land 2022 edition
The Conveyancing (Sale of Land) Regulation 2022 published on 26 August 2022, commences on 1 September 2022. Find out more. Minor stylistic changes have been made to the cooling off notice and several prescribed warnings, but these revised statutory notices need only be included in contracts exchanged on and from 1 March 2023, (and may be contained in contracts exchanged from 1 September 2022). The Contract for the sale and purchase of land 2022 edition will be released in September 2022 and will contain the updated statutory notices, together with other legislative and practice updates.

Duties Regulation 2022
The Duties Regulation 2022, was published on 26 August 2022 and has retrospective operation from 19 May 2022. The purpose of the Regulation is to prescribe certain types of transactions as “excluded transactions” under section 8(3) of the ​​​​​ Duties Act 1997. Section 8(1)(b)(ix) of the Duties Act 1997 imposes duty on another transaction that results in a change in beneficial ownership of dutiable property, other than an excluded transaction. Revenue NSW has updated Chapter 3 of the Legislation Amendment Act 2022 guide with additional information.

Revenue NSW – Electronic Duties Returns (EDR) Update
Revenue NSW has published the August 2022 update. Topics include: off-the-plan First Home Buyer Assistance applications, re-issuing a Duties Notice of Assessment, GST and transfer duty calculations, record keeping and audit, and closure of the DX box.
