PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The joys and challenges of working in rural, regional and remote areas

Over the past week the CEO, Sonja Stewart, Senior Ethics Solicitor, Linden Barnes and I have had the absolute pleasure to attend Regional Law Society meetings and events in Orange, Broken Hill and Ballina. Visits to our regions enable us to connect with members one on one and hear about the joys and challenges of working in rural, regional and remote areas. 

Many rural solicitors face continued challenges with a lack of court resourcing and mental health and alcohol and other drug services to which they can refer clients. Others face disproportionately heavy workloads due to a severe shortage of lawyers in these areas. Some have seen the benefits of COVID-19 related changes to the way we work, with tree-change lawyers hitting their towns and joining local firms. ​​​​Continue reading >

Court arrangements for the Day of Mourning
Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Thursday 22 September will be recognised as a public holiday across the country to mark a National Day of Mourning. Here is everything you need to know about how the public holiday will impact each jurisdiction. This list will be added to and amended as new arrangements are announced between now and the public holiday.

Mock Law Volunteers needed
We are seeking volunteers to write mock scripts and scenarios for the 2023 Mock Trial and Mock Mediation competitions. The Mock Law program is an excellent opportunity to increase public awareness of the legal process, connect with the wider community, and support future members of the legal profession. Mapping the physical self: an introduction to direct-to-consumer genetics

2022 DWL and Dala Disability and Accessibility Panel Event
Diverse Women in Law and Disabled Australian Lawyers Association are holding their inaugural Disability and Accessibility Panel Event on 27 September 2022 to raise awareness and discuss issues of accessibility in the legal profession. 
The event will include a keynote address from Dr. Ben Gauntlett (Disability Discrimination Commissioner), a panel discussion, and a networking component. Register here by Thursday 22 September 2022.

High Court (2023 Sittings) Rules 2022
The Justice of the High Court of Australia have made a Rule of Court appointing the High Court sittings for 2023. The Rule appoints the sittings to be held in Canberra throughout the year and the days on which special leave applications will be heard. Additional sittings may also be held as required and will be appointed by the Chief Justice pursuant to Rule 6.04.2 of the High Court Rules 2004.
