Federal Court and Federal Circuit Court of Australia

The Courts are keen to obtain feedback from the profession, litigants and members of the public about their experience in participating in virtual hearings and electronic ADR events. The feedback received will greatly assist the Courts in improving the way technology is used moving forward. Feedback forms are available here.

State Insurance Regulatory Authority update

The State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) bulletin has the latest updates on COVID-19 including having a say on a new COVID-19 Standard of Practice. This Standard of Practice outlines expectations for insurer claims administration and conduct. Read the SIRA bulletin here.

Roadmap out of COVID-19

The Prime Minister has outlined the three-step national roadmap to ease COVID-19 restrictions, following today’s National Cabinet. The Prime Minister’s goal is to reopen the economy completely by July. The implementation of the plan will be decided by the individual state and territory governments. Cabinet will review the three-step roadmap every three weeks. Easing of restrictions will continue to depend on three criteria of testing, tracing and tracking. Step one includes:

  • Five visitors at home, 10 in businesses and public places
  • Work from home if it works for you and your employer
  • Restaurants, cafes and shopping open
  • Libraries, community centres, playgrounds and boot camps open
  • Local and regional travel
  • Children to return to schools and childcare.

NSW response to National COVID-19 roadmap

Premier Gladys Berejiklian today confirmed that NSW will not be rushing to ease restrictions in NSW just yet. There will be no immediate changes and the two-visitor rule in NSW still applies over the weekend. Read the Premier’s statement here. Stay updated on what you can and cannot do here.

Accommodation industry quarantine help

Hotels in NSW have accommodated more than 13,000 people so far under quarantine arrangements introduced at the end of March 2020 to help contain COVID-19. Read more here.

COVIDSafe app source code released

The Prime Minister has confirmed the COVIDSafe app will be operational and its source code partially released later today.

LCA welcomes funding for frontline legal services

The Law Council of Australia (LCA) has welcomed the Federal Government's additional $63.3 million injection for frontline legal services to support people impacted by COVID-19. Read more here.

ATO suspends early superannuation release scheme

The ATO is putting a halt to applications for early access to superannuation until Monday after instances of identity fraud were detected.

Implementation of findings from Banking Royal Commission to be delayed

The Federal Government will defer the implementation of commitments associated with the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry for six months due to COVID-19 crisis. Read more here.

Compliance and Enforcement Policy for the Consumer Data Right

The ACCC and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) today jointly released the Compliance and Enforcement Policy for the Consumer Data Right. The policy outlines the approach that the ACCC and the OAIC have adopted to encourage compliance with, and address breaches of, the Consumer Data Right regulatory framework. Read more here.
