COVID-19 Update

District Court

Jury trials will not re-commence in the Albury and Campbelltown District Courts on 27 July 2020 due to the recent increase in community transmission of COVID-19 in these areas. Both courts will continue to operate in the current way. The Court will continue to consult with NSW Health and will closely watch how the COVID-19 risk evolves over the coming weeks.

Children’s Court

The President of the Children’s Court has issued a further Public Notice no. 6 dated 9 July 2020. While the Children’s Court will continue to reduce the need for many people to attend court in person, there will be a transition over the coming weeks to a position where more participants will be required to attend court.

New restrictions for NSW hotels

Tough new measures for hotels, agreed to by the NSW Australian Hotels Association, will come into force at 12:01am tomorrow. These include a cap of 300 people per venue, a limit of 10 people per booking or table, and the mandatory implementation of a COVID-19 Safe plan. Clubs, restaurants and the Star Casino are exempt from the new measures. More here.

COVID-19 cases

As of 8pm last night, NSW recorded 10 new cases. Victoria has recorded 317 new cases today, Australia's biggest daily increase so far. Find the latest COVID-19 case locations in NSW here

QLD closes border to Sydney COVID-19 ‘hotspot’ residents

Anyone living in the western Sydney COVID-19 hotspots of Liverpool and Campbelltown local government areas is banned from entering Queensland. The ban also extends to anyone who has travelled through the hotspots in the past two weeks. More here.

JobTrainer skills package

The Morrison Government will invest $2 billion to give hundreds of thousands of Australians access to new skills by retraining and upskilling them into sectors with job opportunities, as the economy recovers from COVID-19. More here.

Second $750 economic payment

Five million Australians on lower incomes will receive a second $750 economic support payment to help manage the financial impact of the pandemic. It will go to social security, veteran and other income support recipients and eligible concession card holders. More here.

Reforms for NSW planning system

The NSW Premier has announced an $83 million NSW Planning Reform Action Plan to keep people in jobs and the economy moving during the COVID-19 pandemic. More here.

Funding support for temporary visa holders

The NSW Government will fund $4 million to support temporary visa holders and specialist migrant and settlement services during the COVID-19 pandemic. More here.

International travellers to pay for hotel quarantine

The NSW Government will start charging returning international travellers for their hotel quarantine accommodation from 12:01am Saturday 18 July 2020. More here.

Employment, hours worked, and unemployment rose in June

Seasonally-adjusted employment increased by 210,800 people between May and June, and the unemployment rate rose from 7.1 per cent to 7.4 per cent, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. More here.

Parliamentary inquiry into litigation funding and class action industry

The inquiry into litigation funding and the class action industry held its first public hearing at Parliament House, Canberra. Terms of reference include the potential impact of Australia’s current class action industry on vulnerable Australian business already suffering the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The next public hearing is on 24 July 2020. More here.
