This year has been a bumper year for the Law Society, with the launch of a number of resources which are designed to have a practical and positive impact on your businesses and workplaces. 

For those of you who like to have information at their fingertips and plan early, I’ll be highlighting some of these resources in the lead up to Christmas. Taking time at the end of the year to plan for the next has always been an exciting time of year for me professionally. State of the NSW Legal Profession Interactive Report
We are excited to mark our 180th anniversary with the launch of the new State of the NSW Legal Profession Interactive Report - a membership benefit designed to give you a greater understanding of the shape of the legal profession. We hope our members enjoy this immersive look into our diverse profession and gain insights into the provision of legal services across the state. View report.
Law Society holiday closure
The Law Society of New South Wales will be closed from Friday 23 December 2022 through to Friday 6 January 2023. During this period, the Law Society will operate with a skeleton staff which will service specific licensing functions. The Law Society’s Phillip Street building and most services to the profession and public, however, will be closed. 
International Day of Persons with Disabilities
In recognition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Law Society's Diversity and Inclusion Committee, in conjunction with Young Lawyers, invites you to an in-person address to be delivered by Rosemary Kayess.
We encourage legal practitioners to attend, particularly anyone interested in practical ways in which they can support and promote human rights and participation of all persons with disabilities. Find out more.
Law Council of Australia South Pacific essay competition
Congratulations to Loretta Houlahan who has won the Law Council of Australia's International Law Section Essay Competition for Studies in the Law of the South Pacific. You can read the essay here. 
Position of Associate to the Hon. Justice Sarah Pritchard
Applications are invited for the position of Associate to the Hon Justice Sarah Pritchard of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales. The appointment will preferably commence in January 2023. This role is part-time, ongoing (3 days a week). Read more here. 
Acting Commissioner Applications
The Attorney General is seeking applications from qualified persons for appointment as Acting Commissioners of the Land and Environment Court of NSW. There are a number of positions available. Read more. 

 
Treasury Laws Amendment (More Competition, Better Prices) Bill 2022
The Treasury Laws Amendment (More Competition, Better Prices) Act 2022 (Act) received royal assent on 9 November and is now in force. 
The increased penalty regime applies immediately. The UCT provisions, which apply from 10 November 2023, expand coverage to small businesses which employ fewer than 100 persons or have an annual turnover of less than $10 million and will apply irrespective of the value of the contract.

Amendments to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Family Law) Rules 2021 
On Monday, 28 November 2022 a number of amendments to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Family Law) Rules 2021 will commence. The attached Update to the Profession details these amendments. 
Federal Circuit and Family Court - Lighthouse Model Update No. 4
The Court has released a series of updates to the profession over the past few weeks in advance of the commencement of the expanded Lighthouse Model on 28 November 2022.

Update No.4, which concerns identifying risk at the point of filing, has been published on the website here.

Revenue NSW has published information about the thresholds for the 2023 land tax year, and other information relevant to settlements occurring early in the new year here

Federal Circuit and Family Court changes to Rules, Practice Directions, Forms and costs The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Family Law) Amendment (Measures No.1 2022) Rules 2022 commence 28 November 2022, amending the Rules in Divisions 1 and 2. Changes include removing the requirement to file a Parenting Questionnaire or Financial Questionnaire with an Initiating Application seeking parenting or financial orders respectively, if an affidavit has also been filed. Delegations to Judicial Registrars and Senior Judicial Registrars have also been altered. Consequential updates have been made to the Practice Directions and Forms. The old Forms may be used until 30 December 2022.
An updated scale of costs, commencing 1 January 2023, is expected to be published shortly. See further the Court’s Update to the Profession here.

Library and Visiting Solicitor Rooms Holiday Closures
​​​​​​The Library and Visiting Solicitor Rooms will be unavailable on Tuesday 20 December 2022 due to a stocktake. All Library services and access to the Visiting Solicitor Rooms will conclude for the year at 12pm on Friday 23 December 2022 and return at 9am on Monday 9 January 2023. Where possible, please submit all library requests for assistance to library@lawsociety.com.au by 4pm on Friday 16 December 2022.

WHS Prosecutions and Civil Matters 
During the Law Term vacation, any applications are to be directed by email to the Associate to the Duty Judge.
From 19 December 2022 to 1 January 2023, the Duty Judge will be his Honour Judge Russell SC. His Honour’s Associate is Ms Sue Hampton sue.hampton@courts.nsw.gov.au
From 2 January 2023 to 15 January 2023, the Duty Judge will be his Honour Judge Scotting. His Honour’s Associate is Ms Liz Waite liz.waite@courts.nsw.gov.au 
From 16 January 2023 to 29 January 2023, the Duty Judge will be her Honour Judge Strathdee. Her Honour’s Associate is Ms Kim Coldicott kim.coldicott@courts.nsw.gov.au
