President of the Law Society of NSW Doug Humphreys OAM has congratulated The Hon. William Alstergren, and The Hon. Robert McClelland, on their respective appointments as the new Chief Justice and Deputy Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia.

Mr Humphreys also took the opportunity to recognise the contribution of the retiring Chief Justice, The Hon. John Pascoe AC CVO. "Chief Justice Pascoe has provided distinguished service to the family law system over many years and the Law Society wishes him well in retirement."

Mr Humphreys noted the distinguished legal careers of Chief Judge Alstergren and Justice McClelland, and wished them well in their stewardship of a challenging jurisdiction.

"The need for reform of the family law system has been widely acknowledged, and the Law Society has been active this year in advocating for a single court to deal with family law matters, with appropriate funding  and resource commitments," Mr Humphreys said.

"We will continue to advocate for a robust and specialised family law system, and we look forward to working with the new Chief Justice and Deputy Chief Justice in this regard."
