Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the 29 Regional Presidents from across the state met virtually on 22 October 2020. Here is a summary of items discussed as well as access to a series of online initiatives that might be relevant to you.
Law Society 2020 Council election results
Seven candidates were declared elected as Councillors of The Law Society of NSW by the Company Secretary, each for a three-year term, in accordance with clause 8.3.7 of the Articles of Association, at the Annual General Meeting on 22 October 2020. View Results.
Annual Members Address
On Monday 26 October we took the time to reflect on the year that has been and the many positive advances we have made as a profession, honouring the achievements of solicitors who have practised law for 50 years, and announced Peter Rosier as the recipient of the 2020 President’s Medal. We welcome new Chief Executive Officer, Sonja Stewart to the Law Society of NSW

Sonja Stewart was appointed Chief Executive Officer in August and attended her first Regional Presidents Meeting. Ms Stewart was a Deputy Secretary within the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet and prior to that, a Deputy Commissioner of the NSW Public Service Commission. Most recently, she was the Interim Chief Executive Officer of Arrilla Consulting, a joint venture with KPMG. Find out more

Contingency plan to assist sole principals
The Council of the Law Society has established a process which enables sole practitioners to nominate a personal representative who would be willing to take over a practitioner’s practice should they become incapacitated or die. The new scheme was announced in late June. Read more

Regional grants

The Law Society of NSW is pleased to provide:

  • The City of Sydney Law Society with $3,000 to contribute towards website upgrades.
  • Central Coast Law Society with $2,000 to contribute towards donations to local not-for-profit, Coast Shelter.
  • Central West Law Society with $1,000 to contribute towards bursary and student prize initiatives.
