Consultation on proposed new conduct rule
The Law Council of Australia has released a consultation paper proposing that a new rule 11A be added to the Australian Solicitors’ Conduct Rules. The proposed rule clarifies how existing ethical principles relating to conflicts of interest may be applied when providing short-term legal assistance services. The consultation closes on 7 December 2020. Read more.

Cybercrime alert
Since the last alert, the Trust Accounts department has been inundated with notifications from various law practices stating they have become aware there are emails that appear to have been sent by them to other law practices/clients asking the other law practices/clients to open an attached document or to click onto a link. They did not send the emails and only became aware when one of the law practices/clients advised them of the emails. They did not send the email. Read more.

SIRA’s Dispute Resolution Services DX 10 SYDNEY Mail Service closing
From 1 December 2020, legal representatives will no longer be able to send correspondence to DRS via DX 10 SYDNEY. Any correspondence received via DX 10 SYDNEY will be returned to sender. In accordance with the Motor Accident Electronic Dispute Management System Online User Protocol, legal representatives are required to lodge, respond to and communicate with DRS through the Legal Portal. Any general correspondence, not related to a dispute, should be sent via email to drsenquiries@sira.nsw.gov.au.

Legal Aid NSW taking next step towards simplifying its panels processes
Law practices currently on our panels will be invited to apply to a new panel structure in accordance with the transition schedule which began in October with Sydney Metro. Law Practices currently on panels must apply or panel memberships held by individuals at the law practice will lapse after 1 February 2021.
After 1 February, law practices not currently on panels will be able to apply.
For legal practitioners to be eligible to undertake legal aid work, they must meet the individual requirements for the relevant panel.

There is an exciting legal role for up to 9 months with the Office of the Registrar General. The Office of the Registrar General sits within the NSW Department of Customer Service and is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the NSW land titles system.
