Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 Compliance
In August we received our compliance letter from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency advising that we are compliant with the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 (Act) for the 2021-22 reporting period. The Act requires non-public sector employers with 100 or more employees to submit a report to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency each year. Compliance letters are issued after the Agency has reviewed the submission to ensure the organisation has submitted a fully compliant report.

Update on the Victorian Government’s proposed mandatory reporting requirement for lawyers
We recently wrote to the NSW Attorney General, voicing our prevailing strong reservations with the Victorian Government’s proposal for a mandatory reporting requirement for lawyers. While the Victorian Government has amended its mandatory reporting model to reflect some of our earlier feedback, the Law Society remains concerned the proposal is too broad in scope and ambiguous for practical application.
Terry Keaney Award Winner – Annmarie Lumsden
This year’s winner of the Terry Keaney Award is Annmarie Lumsden, who for many years was the Director of Criminal Law at Legal Aid NSW. The criteria for the award are dedication to the profession, excellence as a criminal defence lawyer, commitment to clients and concern for social justice. Annmarie was formerly a Law Society Councillor and long-standing Chair of the Criminal Law Committee.

Revenue NSW: General statement for transfer duty and leases
Pending Regulation and guidance notes, Revenue NSW has released a general statement on when a Lease is dutiable as a change in beneficial ownership. Find out more information here. The statement notes that generally, leases where rent is paid or payable will not be liable for duty, provided there is no premium or other consideration for the grant of the lease.
