PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Welcoming the new Law Term and the 2022 President's Charity, Sober in the Country

As I sat down to prepare this week’s Monday Briefs, I was reminded of the incredible spirit, sense of duty and service we have as Australians. As part of the Australia Day Honours List for 2022, former Law Society President (2013) and Cronulla solicitor John Dobson was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM), for his service to the legal profession. Change to Legal Aid NSW merit test for Commonwealth family law matters
From 10 January 2022, Merit Test A applies to all Commonwealth family law applications that were previously assessed using Merit Test B. Merit Test A assesses whether it is reasonable in all the circumstances to grant legal aid. This change will help to achieve greater consistency and transparency around decisions on merit. See Policy Bulletin 2022/2 (Family Law: Merit Test A) for details. See also Merit Test A - tip sheet to assist lawyers applying the test.
