Fighting food poverty with Foodbank

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

This year, I have selected Foodbank, Australia’s largest food relief organisation, as the President’s Charity. As the only food charity to play a role in times of emergency and natural disasters, Foodbank has an integral role in the current bushfire response, delivering emergency food and water to communities completely cut off, damaged or destroyed by the fires.

Unfortunately, for too many Australians, it doesn’t take a bushfire to cause food insecurity.

At some point each year, more than four million Australians are in crisis, dealing with the anguish and despair of not knowing where their next meal is coming from for themselves and their families. In more recent times, Foodbank has been providing food relief to those in our drought-impacted farming communities.

As the "pantry for Australian charities", Foodbank distributes 300 tonnes of food and groceries each week in NSW and the ACT (the equivalent of 15-16 semi-trailers) to charities, schools and individuals.

The logistics involved in transporting, distributing and keeping this food fresh is staggering. But when you donate to Foodbank, you do so with the knowledge it will make a real and immediate difference to fighting food poverty.

That’s because for every dollar donated, Foodbank is able to provide two meals to people in need.

I am excited about working with Foodbank NSW/ACT in 2020, supporting them in their valuable work and encouraging my fellow solicitors to do the same.

Finally, I am looking forward to joining friends, colleagues, members of the legal profession and the judiciary at the Opening of Law Term Dinner at Parliament House in Sydney this Wednesday. It is always a wonderful event and one of the fine traditions marking the opening of the legal year.
