President of Law Society of NSW, Gary Ulman, said Justice Susan Kiefel's appointment as Chief Justice in the High Court was a 'red letter day' for the legal profession.

"Justice Kiefel's appointment is well-deserved and ought to be celebrated in its own right. It is also a momentous occasion for the profession," said Mr Ulman.

Mr Ulman said while the advancement of women is a major priority for the Society and the wider legal profession, events like Justice Kiefel's appointment, fast-tracked those efforts and sent a powerful message throughout the whole profession.

Mr Ulman also congratulated Federal Court Justice James Edelman who is set to replace Ms Kiefel as puisine judge on the High Court.

"At 42, Justice Edelman's meteoric rise as a judge continues. He has served the Federal Court with distinction, and as the Prime Minister stated, he is 'one of the most outstanding legal minds of his generation'."

"Both of these appointments are symbolic of changes throughout the legal profession. We are seeing a new generation of lawyers rise through the profession, a profession in which women are increasingly playing a leading role," said Mr Ulman.
